What is LEAP?
The Lived life Experience Advisory Panel (LEAP) is a community level/community-based group comprised of individuals who have firsthand experience with respect to deaf health and wellbeing issues in Wales.
Their task and role in the Deaf Health Wales (DHW) project are to provide insight, feedback, and recommendations to the DHW team help ensure that its actions, decisions, methods, research activities, communication and engagement strategies, feedback, proposed interventions, outputs and recommendations are guided, informed and shaped by real-world lived-life experience.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities of LEAP include, but are not limited to, the following:

Providing a channel to share both personal experiences and those from others with the DHW team, highlighting real-world challenges and barriers affecting deaf communities in Wales.

Advising on DHW policies, interventions, and activities to ensure they meet the needs of deaf communities in Wales.

Helping the DHW team to understand what works, what doesn’t, and how the project’s efforts and activities can be improved.

Providing feedback from deaf communities throughout Wales as to the project’s actions, interventions, outputs and engagement.

Helping the DHW team better understand the human impact of their decisions, actions, and engagement activities and strategies.

Advising on the refinement of ethical guidelines and the development of codes of conduct for working with deaf communities in Wales, providing guidance on complex cases, and promoting an ethical research culture.
Via the Chair, LEAP provides feedback, advice and suggestions to ensure that the DHW team’s decisions, policies, research, and actions align with ethical standards, legal requirements, and best practice (training will be provided), and that the deaf community in Wales is aware that such practices are in place and being upheld.
Composition
The Panel consists of five members from the Welsh deaf community whose first or preferred language is British Sign Language (BSL). It is comprised of the following:

The panel members have been selected to try and best reflect geographical representation across Wales (North, South, Mid, and West).
