Deaf Health Wales is committed to carrying out research that is fair, respectful and responsible. All of our studies follow strict ethical standards and have been approved by Bangor University’s Research Ethics Committee.
This means:
- Participation is always voluntary.
- You will be given clear information before you take part.
- You can withdraw at any time.
- Your information will be stored securely and kept confidential.
- Your choices about how your data is used will always be respected.
Three levels of involvement
Each project activity is labelled with a level. This tells you what is involved and what consent is needed.
Interviews, workshops or surveys
Share information in recorded conversations, workshops, focus groups or surveys.
Media and archives
Allow public/academic use and long-term archiving at Bangor University.

Aim of the research
A project that aims to design, implement and evaluate deaf-led solutions for known health inequities and inequalities facing deaf BSL signers in Wales.
Methodology
- Level 1 – You will give brief feedback or answer short questions.
- Level 2 – You will join an interview or focus group/workshop to share your experiences.
- Level 3 – You will take part in co‑design activities or recorded sessions.
Data protection
- Your name will not be used. We will use a made-up name so you cannot be identified.
- Your data will only be used for this research project.
- Your data will be stored in the UK in line with UK data protection law.
- Video recordings and signed consent forms will be uploaded directly to secure Bangor University storage (OneDrive/SharePoint).
- Only the research team will be able to access your data.
- Because some activities may involve small groups, we cannot fully control what other participants share outside the session.
- Only non-identifying quotes will be used in reports and publications.
- Your data will be anonymised, and all recordings and transcripts will be deleted.
- You can withdraw from the study at any time before anonymisation, and you do not have to give any reasons.

In cases of problems or complaints, the principal investigator or the university’s research ethics team can be contacted on the email addresses above. If you feel upset or confused because of taking part in this project, you can stop at any time and speak to the research team or principal investigator.
